The view from here - the days grow shorter

The challenge this week was to photograph at night without the use of flash. Initially I read the challenge and thought, how am I to take part? It's moving into summer here, not winter.

However, I soon came to my senses and realised that night falls at 6.30 sharp every day so I had plenty of scope for trying. I thought, having no photogenic children to photograph, that I would try to showcase some of our treasures.

I haven't quite mastered the non-flash bit yet, and it was not helped by the strange lighting in the room I was photographing in but I gave it my best shot.

As the days and nights grow hotter we retreat to this upstairs room, with good ceiling fans and it's height all the better to catch a breeze. The bright Zanzibari cushions against the pale whites helps it feel cooler.

Recently we indulged in some shopping recently and invested in an antique Zanzibar chest. The metal detailing is beautiful.

To keep our bright cushions company we have this little fellow trying to ride an elephant. Made by a local artist, we hope we'll be able to bring him with us to several more sitting rooms around the world.

  1. I can only imagine what the nights must feel like there. Do you have air-con or do you sleep with fans whirring and mosquito nets down? It all seems so completely different to where we are and it embodies my vision for "The View from Here." I realized after I wrote this week's challenge that my friends in the Southern Hemisphere would have a different challenge altogether...but you rose to the occasion beautifully.

  2. I sleep with the mosquito nets down and the fans whirring. When the heat really kicks in in December and January we'll start to use the air-con in preference to waking up with our sheets soaked, although as a rule I'm not a fan.

    Thanks for the comment!
