We were lucky enough to be invited to spend the weekend at a friend's parents house, a short drive out of the city, but far enough that you felt in a completely different world.
We managed to avoid a ferry queue by leaving during the most spectacular morning downpour of rain, which meant that nobody was trying to get to the beach. We then arrived at the house to find that the rain had not reached that far and it was blue skies and sunshine for the rest of the day.
The house is beautifully set on the top of a cliff and designed to withstand the tropical heat - the thatched roof reached out well beyond the walls, to ensure that the walls never heated in the direct sunlight and to give a shady veranda to relax on at all times. Outdoor living come true!
In addition to that each section of the house was separate from the others meaning that it was never more than one room deep, allowing a cooling breeze to wash up from the sea and through all the rooms. The bedroom we stayed in was in little space off the right of the main building. This main section held the kitchen, eating and living areas. Then the parents room was over a short distance to the left and beyond it an office building. It was charming and perfect for the weather here.
The weekend held sleeping, white wine, gin and tonics, reading, swimming, talking, talking and talking. Oh, and playing with the dogs and walking on the cliffs. I couldn't have asked for a better weekend and I have made a new friend through it. We are going to become walking buddies, this girl and I. This girl who so casually extended the invitation even though we didn't know her that well. Thank you to this girl.
