We’re back from one of the most challenging and yet one of the most wonderful holidays of my life. We watched animals in the Ngorongoro crater for a day, marveling at the rhinos, cooing over the surprisingly sweet looking hyenas, admiring the zebras and falling in love with lions. We then moved onto the camping and hiking section of the tours and we walked through numerous different landscapes over the course of the next four days, from rolling green hills, to lush forests, to the ash strewn slopes of an active volcano and on down to the alkaline wonder that is Lake Natron and its flamingos.
I was in serious physical pain after walking 25.5km the first day over some rough terrain and it was a wake-up call that I need to look after my fitness more. I have never come so close to being physically unable to do something as I have always been fit and healthy.
We then rested afterwards in the beautiful colonial style “Rivertree Country Inn” and reveled in having a bed to sleep in rather than a mat on the ground. It was all wood furniture, delicious food and open log fires. I wanted to stay forever. However we’re back and my brother arrived in town yesterday with his girlfriend so we are back into host mode and loving it. I hadn’t seen my brother in a year and a half but once I saw his lanky 6 and half foot frame standing out over the rest of the crowd at the airport it was like he’d never been away. I think I’m going to enjoy his visit.
